Hungerford of Down Ampney

Hungerford arms

The Hungerfords of Down Ampney were descended from a younger son of Walter, baron Hungerford (1378-1449). Close ties were maintained with other branches of the family into the 17th century. According to Rudder, the county boundary with Wiltshire ran through the kitchen of the manor house.

Sir John (d. 1582)

He was the son of Sir Anthony (d. 1558) and his first wife Jane, daughter of Sir Edward Darrell of Littlecote, Wilts. He was educated at the Inner Temple. He married

  1. Bridget, daughter of John Fettiplace (d. 1524) of East Shefford, Berks.
    Her mother Dorothy married John's father as his second wife and the marriage of their children was probably arranged at the time.

  2. Eleanor (d. 1592), daughter of Walter, lord Hungerford of Heytesbury and widow of William Masters
    The marriage settlement was agreed in 1563
    • John - mentioned in his brother Henry's will.
    • Henry (d. 1582) settled in South Marston, Wilts. and married Elizabeth Brooke. When he wrote his will in 1580 his children Henry, Anthony, Susan and Anne were all minors.
    • Anne married 1) Henry Brydges (d. 1597) of Keynesham, Som. & 2) Sir William Harman (of Isleworth?)
    • Dorothy married Anthony Ingram of Little Wolford, Warws.
    • Elizabeth married Humphrey Fitzwilliam (d. 1604) of Kempston, Beds.

He sat for Great Bedwyn in Mary I's first parliament in October 1553. He was a justice of the peace in Gloucestershire from 1569 and served as sheriff. He was knighted in 1574.

He married Bridget, daughter of John Shelley esq. of Clapham, Sussex. She came from a catholic family, both her brothers being staunch recusants.

In his will he referred to having sold most of his wife's jointure 'in my great necessitie'.

  2. Anne (d. 1664), daughter of Edward Goddard of East Woodhay, Hants. and widow of Robert Arnold of Armswell, Dorset
    In 1636 Wiliam Sotwell was absolved from a sentence of excommunication for being at the marriage of Sir John Hungerford of Down Ampney to Anne Arnold alias Hungerford, widow.

  1. Elizabeth (d. 1618), daughter of Sir Thomas Lucy (d. 1605) of Charlecote
    • Bridget married Edward Dunch (1603-1678) of Little Wittenham, Berks. (probably in 1630 - they were certainly married in 1635, when she was mentioned in the will of her grandmother Lady Constance Lucy). He was a parliamentarian and cousin of Oliver Cromwell, briefly (1658-60) raised to be Baron Burnell.
      Their eldest son was Hungerford Dunch (1639-80).
  2. Jane, daughter of Michael Earnley esq. and his wife Susan, daughter of Sir Walter Hungerford of Farley
    The marriage had taken place by 1628.
