Lowe of Ozleworth

Newark Park

Sir Gabriel Lowe (d. 1659)

He was the son of Sir Thomas Lowe (d. 1624), a London merchant who served as Lord Mayor in 1604 and Anne (d. 1626), daughter of Gabriel Colston, another London merchant. His father acquired the manor of Ozleworth and Newark Park from Sir John Poyntz. He was settled in Gloucestershire, when his father made his will.

He married about 1617 Anne, daughter of Henry Hungerford of Down Ampney and widow of Wlliam Bennett of Marlborough. He was knighted in 1618.

In Charles I's reign he was Captain of the 50 trained horse in the division of Berkeley.

Sir Gabriel (d. 1704) Son

He married in 1649 Lydia, daughter of Sir Stephen Soame (d. 1640) of Heydon, Essex, whose family had also made their fortunes in the commercial world of London.

He was knighted at the Restoration. He appears to have been unusually active as a JP, signing 35 Hearth Tax exemption certificates in the late spring and summer of 1672. His own house at Newark was assessed at 12 hearths.

Timothy (d. 1736) Son

He married Mary (d. 1714), daughter of Abel Wantner of Gloucester by whom he had two sons: Timothy (d. 1719) and Gabriel.
